The Caravel was used for trade during the 1300's through the 1600's. During Columbus's first voage he used this ship. The Caravel is lighter, faster, smaller and more easier to maneuver on the water. The boat has four masts. The Foremast had square rigged sails. The other masts used a triangular sail or a lateen. The caravel was first introduced in 1225A.D. and was faster and had a shallow draft. The caravel had a rounded hull, square stern, and three masts. It was used as a cargo ship, warship, patrol, dispatch, and pirate ships. It was light at 50- 200 tons for speed and maneuverability.
